Started my Home Assistant journey

Home Assistant has been on my project list for a while and I have finally got started.

I had a spare Raspberry Pi 400 that I bought from The Pi Hut. In the process of researching the installation process it was recommended to use an SSD drive to boot from and not a MicroSD card. This is because Home Assistant will be constantly writing to the MicroSD card and it will wear out quickly.

I bought this SSD to USB 3.0 Cable for Raspberry Pi from The Pi Hut. They were out of stock of SSD drives at the time, so I bought this Western Digital 240GB GREEN SSD 2.5 IN 7MM SATA III 6GB/S drive from Amazon. It didn’t need to be this large, but for £20 I couldn’t see the point of looking for a smaller one.

I followed this video by Speak to the Geek explaining how to make the SSD bootable with Home Assistant.

I will be posting more about my Home Assistant journey. I have already integrated my LuxPowerTek inverter which gives me the solar data. I also have my house energy usage coming into Home Assistant. I am using a Hildebrand Glow for that. More about that in another post.

Michael Curtis

My introduction to computers started at my middle school in 1981 when our maths teacher brought in a ZX80. That led the computer club being founded and using a Research Machine 380Z

My first computer was a 48K ZX Spectrum which I loved to programme. Once I left school I worked as a photocopier engineer, then a fax engineer and finally moving on the Apple computers.

For the next 30 years I worked as a system administrator. I now work in the cyber security industry as a Sophos Professional Services consultant
